Not all chiropractors treat athletes, but at Pure Chiropractic it’s a passion of ours. After all, Dr. Jason Hare loves living an active lifestyle too! In the past we’ve had the pleasure of treating sports injury problems of international gymnasts, international body builders, English National rugby team players, the world’s #2 cyclist, and more.
Of course, life is a bit slower here in the smaller town of Nanaimo, BC. These days we treat other adults who are trying to stay active and take care of themselves. But whether you are a professional athlete or an amateur athlete it’s certainly possible to cause all sorts of traumas to your body as you get out there and play hard.
Common Sports Injuries and How to Prevent Them
The most common sports injuries are:
- Sprained ankles
- Strained hamstrings
- Shin splints
- Knee injuries
- Tennis elbow
- Pulled muscles in the groin
- Scrapes and abrasions
- Broken bones
As you can see, strains and sprains do dominate this list. That old wisdom about warming up before you start any sport is actually very true. You also should try to make exercise a regular thing so you are conditioned for the activities you want to do. You also want to avoid over-doing it, especially if you’re starting a new activity for the first time. Start small and work your way up to the level of activity you’re hoping to achieve.
You should also wear proper protection whenever you can. Elbow pads, knee pads, and helmets are a great idea for anyone who wants to avoid any major sports injury! Using the proper safety equipment is the smartest way to play the game, even if you’re playing very casually. Don’t just assume “you’ll be fine” without it.
Sports Injury Care at Pure Chiropractic
We handle many types of sports injuries, not just spinal injuries. We’ve worked with wrist injuries, shoulder injuries, ankles, and wrists as well. Dr. Hare has been trained in these sorts of problems and does help athletes recover from them on a regular basis.
However, we are also part of your overall health team. If there are problems we can’t deal with we’ll let you know. For example, if you’ve broken a bone or torn your ACL we can’t do much to fix you. At that point, we’d refer you to another provider instead. Still, you can feel comfortable making Pure Chiropractic your first stop for sports injuries.
We will give you a thorough evaluation and do everything we can to get you back to life. We can also tell you when it’s safe and advisable to start playing again.
What you don’t want to do is simply assume the injury is something you can take care of with ice and aspirin…sometimes small problems become very big problems when you don’t take the time to properly evaluate them and tend to them. Remember, certain traumas can continue to cause complications long after pain has subsided.
